Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Warm and prep the tools: Soak the tips of your bamboo whisk in warm water for a few minutes to soften the prongs. Wipe your bowl dry.
  • Sift the powder: Place your mesh sifter over the bowl. Measure 1 to 2 grams of matcha powder into the sifter and press it through with a small spoon or scoop to remove lumps.
  • Add hot water: Pour about 60 to 70 ml of water (which has been boiled and allowed to cool slightly to around 75–80°C) into the bowl. Do not use boiling water, as it scorches the tea and makes it bitter.
  • Whisk vigorously: Hold the whisk loosely and move it rapidly back and forth in a tight "W" or "M" pattern using your wrist—not your whole arm. Whisk for about 15 to 20 seconds until a fine, creamy foam covers the surface.
  • Serve: Drink the matcha directly from the bowl, or pour it over ice and milk if you prefer a matcha latte.
